Little Shoesies!

Bubbaboo is wearing size 2 shoes already! It means the hippo shoes I made to give his daddy for Fathers Day squish his toes. *Sad Face*

Cameron Seakers (IThinkSew)

We're headed back to the Motherland before too long, which will be a shock to the system for this summer baby who seems cold if it drops below 30oC. So I decided a new pair of shoes were needed to keep his toesies toasty.

These are up-cycled from a wool skirt from the op shop, which barely fit at the time and which I cannot imagine fitting anytime soon, even if I had occasion to wear it! But I loved the weave, so I knew they'd make some smart baby clothes. Its a bit poofy, and that made the pleated front panel much harder, but I'm liking the finished look:

Jaden Sneakers ((IThinkSew)

They are lined with black jersey, with black drill cotton for the sole, interfaced with fleece for comfort and warmth. I cant imagine a lack of non-slip soles being an issue at 6 weeks!

This one is finished (after a week of stolen moments), and I have a second that needs hand finishing (the hole to turn out sewing up and the front panel and closures attaching).
We'll get there soon!

In the meantime, its all about crochet while bubs is being needy and not napping away from my chest!

Belated Jubilee Celebrations

So, I know I said that we weren't doing anything to celebrate the Jubilee, but it turns out I spoke too soon! My friend was away working for the jubilee celebrations, so had a belated "Best of British" dinner party.
We sat in a bunting lined kitchens, eating British favourites off a Union Flag draped table, while listening to the last night of the proms on CD.

Toad in the Hole with onion gravy.
Rhubarb Crumble and cream.
Jubilee "Strawberries and Cream" fairy cakes
Fudge
After 8s

What more could we POMS want?!
And got to wear my Jubilee Sorbetto again too!

(apologies for the rubbish phone picture!)

Diamond Jubilee

Its the Queens Diamond Jubilee weekend, and while I may be "Australian" I'm still born and bred British. I'm neither for or against the royal family, but I do think that events such as this weekend are good for national moral. Wether we can afford it is maybe another question...

We didn't do anything to celebrate, though I am writing this post while watching the coverage of the Thames Pageant on UKTV...

But... I was in Spotlight yesterday, and I accidentally bought some fabric. I know, I know... But my stash is relatively small, and Spotlight had 30% off all their fabric, and they had some nice fabrics in their clearance section. I actually went in for some baby-boy fabric to make up some items for a friends baby shower in a couple of weeks. In the end I managed to get around 11m of fabric for $40, which I'm pretty happy with!

The other fabrics are another story... but when I was deciding what to get, I spied this fabulous fabric:

Who could say no!
(Erm... didn't I just say I was only going to buy wearable fabrics that made me look liek I know what I am talking about? Me? Erm...)

We had a BBQ to go to that afternoon... not for the jubilee, just because, but hosted by one of my bestest buddies who also happens to be a POM.
So I snapped up a meter ($6!) and planned my sorbetto on the way home.
We were only slightly late to the BBQ, and I had a fabulous new top to show off!

The front keeps the sorbetto pleat, but I made the neckline angular to match the flags. I faced the openings, because I didn't have any suitable binding, and was too short on time to make some! The steps could have done with interfacing to stabilise them, but again, time was against me.

On the back, I deepened and squared off the neck line, and added a bit of a frill, playing with the print direction. (Though next time I would make it shorter)
I also added 3 lines of shiring at the top of the frill to aid in fitting (its not a drapy poplin, especially since I was too impatient to wash it first)
(All on top of my usual grading of the pattern in at the chest and out at the hips, and adding about 6cm to the length)

We may not be having a street party, or be drinking pimms or tea, but at least I  have been flying the flag this weekend!

:(

My fiancés father is having some trouble at the moment;  He's been signed off work since mid October, had a transient ischemic attack (a mini stroke) that put him in hospital last week, and he had an appointment with the surgeon yesterday, with the surgery happening on thursday. I don't really know many details about it. unclogging his arteries I think...

He's in England, we're here, and to make it even worse we both work away, so I'm in one place and he's 800km away from me. My fiancé is mostly pretending to be tough, but he's also very worried, upset and not sleeping.

I don't know what to say to him, apart from "I love you and will always be here for you", and I feel guilty because I was the one who originally 'dragged' us both over here, though he was more than willing after a little persuasion. I keep feeling upset (tears in eyes etc) when I think about it because its my worst nightmare pretty much realised. But I need to stay strong too!

We're planning a trip home at Christmas now, but at the moment that seems such a long way away.

Eyjafjallajökull

Thats the big volcano thats erupting in Iceland at present, and causing such chaos around the world.
How could a Geologist not write about it!

So, according to Wikipedia, this volcano has been active on and off for the last thousand years, but this event started rumbling in 2009, with the first eruption on the 20th March 2010. That one just cause 500 people problems. When it erupted again on the 14th April, the amount of ash it has thrown up into the atmosphere has grounded planes all over europe, backing up air passengers all over the world. And suddenly the world has realised just how reliant we have become on air travel! (image is the ash cloud on  17th April 2010)

So, whats actually going on?

Well. We all know about volcanoes, right? Rock, so hot that its not solid any more, works its way to the surface because its less dense than its surroundings, and escapes at the top. Kind of like the way oil sits on water.

Now sometimes this is a nice smooth process. It all depends on the chemistry of the rocks. But places like Hawaii have really runny lava that erupts nice and easily, whereas volcanoes like Mt Etna, in Italy, have very sticky, thick, only just about liquid lava which doesn't escape as easily. As this kind of lava gets to the surface, all the gasses in it expand due to the drop in pressure at the surface. And BANG! It blows the lava to pieces and results in very explosive eruptions.

Now, the Iceland volcano is different again. Icelandic lava is pretty runny in general, but in this case the volcano is erupting under a glacier.

Hot lava + cold ice = water = explosions

Why? Ever made the very dangerous mistake of throwing water onto burning oil? It doesn't end well. The water flashes to steam and expands explosively, taking the burning oil with it and causing horrific fire balls (see picture!)

The same happens to the lava- when the molten ice mixes with the molten rock, the rock freezes instantly into a "glass"[i.e. solidifies so quickly its atoms can't get into a set structure kind of like with glass] and the ice flashes explosively to steam, explosively dispersing tiny little fragments of glass into the upper atmosphere.

Which then gets into plane engines and stops them from working and risks the plane dropping out of the sky.

What I find really amusing is that people are talking it personally, and expecting the government to drop everything and get them to where they need to be. It’s a
n.a.t.u.r.a.l.d.i.s.a.s.t.e.r.
also known as an
Act of God.
Its no ones fault! No one can fix it or make it go away any faster. The volcano isn’t out to make your life harder. Its just doing what it does! Its costing the economy a huge ammount, they inevitably means its costing lots of people lots of money. But hey! You're stuck on holiday. Things could be worse.

I know, its not currently affecting me personally, but it might. Last time it erupted, it went on for two years. Hopefully it will boil off all the water and then hopefully the explosivity of the eruption will drop. But I've read a few reports of a "more sticky" lava coming up, so we'll see.
I'm flying home on the 3rd June. So fingers crossed it'll have died down by then. But if it hasn't, I don't expect the government to sail a ship over here to get me home.

Oh, and fingers crossed for Al- his ultra marathon is due to finish 3km from the volcano. Fingers crossed all his training won't go to waste!

My Goals from way back in August

I've been thinking recently that I need to remind myself of my goals, so here is what I wrote last August when I was realised quite how much my weight, or more importantly, my volume, had snuck up. I was only about 4 kilos more than I averaged all the way through uni, but I'd always felt happier on the low side of where I was, even before this time last year and the start of the rapid ascent!

I got to 69 for my birthday, which was good enough for me. I felt really skinny and tried on some smart trousers that'd been sat languishing in the drawers because thay'd always been on the tight side even on good days, and they were positively baggy :)
And I'm still 68...
But I'd still like to reach 65 for the wedding. 3 kilos in 4 months. You'd think it should be easy!
Sometime soon I'll go through and re do them, and hopefully it'll spur me on to get down to 65, or preferably even 62 maybe?!, for June...

The CK University wants me to think through my motivation, so here I go:

Health I'm borderline BMI at present, though do have a decent set of muscles beneath. But still, more into the healthy range can't hurt, and might save me from going the other way...

Appearance I want a waist... and I want more clothes to look OK on me.

Self-esteem My self esteem is already pretty decent most of the time, thanks in part to a lovely OH who, like in Bridget Jones, loves me just the way I am... But like everyone I have fat days and days where nothing in the wardrobe looks right.

Self-confidence See above... anything that boosts my confidence around strangers has got to be good.

Energy I know that the more I exercise, the better I feel for the rest of the time.

Self-control I have none, its all or nothing. So will be interesting!

Ability to engage in more physical activities I do most anyway...

Social acceptance I already feel socially accepted, but would be nice not to have to wonder if I'm what the guys at work talk about when they mock their mates for taking home girls using descriptions like "well, she wasn't a whale, but y'know, not too good"

Special occasion 25th Birthday in November and for some reason its getting to me :nono1:Plus bridesmaid next June for one of my best friends weddings back in blighty. Will also be the first time I'll have seen most of the people in 3 years, so would be nice to look good.

So... Main motivators are:
To look better.
Special occassions.

Goals:

67kg by November 19th - my quarter centuary and about the lightest I'll ever have been while taking any notice

65kg by June - for the wedding. Will be mainly a case of maintaining it over that long I think.

Mini Goal - 70kg by 1st October - I know these sound long and drawn out, but I don't want to drop down the bounce right back up again!

Holidays!

Yey!
I love holiday planning.

We have many trips in the pipeline- its going to be a great year!

  • Finally going to go to Melbourne on my first break in March. We were going to go for ~3 weeks, and do a week ish in Melbourne, a week probably in the Snowy Mountains (and Mt Kozy-what-ever-its-called) and a weekend in Canberra, but all the OHs workmates had jumped in and he couldnt get the time off. So just Melbourne it is. Bring on nice food and shopping!
  • Hopefully, I will be meeting up withj my best friend from school in Cairns in May-ish. Shes been in NZ for the last 9 months and then plans to do a bit a trip along the east coast before returning to the UK. She's headed from Sydney to Darwin, and Cairns seems liek a good option. I went when my parents were over in August and loved it, so want to take the OH and do soem more exploring.
  • We're off back to the UK in June for the wedding. It'll be 3 years since I'll have seen most of the people so I'm excited!
  • On the way back we're stopping over in Dubai to see one of my other bestest friends who's currently there engineering water until he gets enough experience to engineer water for Oxfam. We get to see the Burj. I'm nearly as excited as teh OH about that!
  • The only time this year that the Staircase to the Moon falls on our break is in September, so we're beading to Broome. I liekd it when I was there... 4 years ago? And when we were sorting through all the residency evidence I found a postcard I'd written, saying that when we moved over here we had to come back and ride camels on the beach at sunset. And now I'm aware of the existancy and deliciousness of Matsos Brewery, so its going to be amazing!
So much planning potential!
Love it!

Where are you off to this year?
